The William Morgenthaler House

The Morgantheler house was originally a one room log cabin occupied by fur traders. The original date of construction is uncertain, but it could have been built as early as the formation of the town of Hallsville in 1834. Sometimes prior to being occupied by William and Ruth Morganthaler the one room cabin was enclosed into a four room house. In 1917, William Morganthaler added three upstairs rooms. After William Morganthaler's death in 1947, the home continued to be occupied by their daughter Mildred until her death in 1980. The house was donated to the City of Hallsville in 1990 by Les Tribble.

Today, except for normal wear and tear, the building remains much as it was when the second story was added in 1917. The foundation has settled, the eighty year old metal roof has a few holes, and the windows and doors need to be repaired or replaced. Still the house is in remarkable good condition. The original log cabin walls are visible in the living room of the house today.

In 1994, the Hallsville Historical Society was formed and given the charter to restore the house at no cost to the city. After the restoration is completed the house will be opened to the public as a museum.
